Peckhamplex

The purpose of this project was to work as a team to look at how Peckhamplex Cinema could be redeveloped. Peckhamplex is an independent cinema serving the local community in South London. I built a 1:25 model of Peckhamplex, to ‘lens’ the immediate environment.

After observing the behaviour of the cinemagoers, we found that the viewer experience at Peckhamplex contrasted sharply to most cinemas. Viewers would talk through the film, the lights would never fully go down and people would smuggle Mcdonalds from across the road. This led to a different sensory experience for the audience. For the next part of the project we had to respond to this through a critical intervention using a model that we built. We decided to try and use sensory isolation as a solution. We used noise cancelling headphones to mask outside noise and curtains to block outside light. The model was constructed using a three sided box with one side being open for the viewer. We used a laptop to project an image of a beating heart which was repeated continuosly using a three sided mirror.
